Technology Never Rests: The Value of Continuting Education

January 12th, 2012

A college graduate 10 years ago left school with a head full of knowledge and a desire in his heart to make the world a better place. If this person graduated with a degree in History, today he is still able to use his knowledge to teach students; write academic theses regarding the similarities of Greek democracy to the newly free countries of Iraq and Libya; and even run the board if he gets to be a contestant on Jeopardy.

Another graduate with an IT degree isn’t as lucky. Most of his knowledge is still correct but probably outdated. Cutting-edge computers a decade ago are recycled trash today. New programming languages have been created and the Web and email has made some significant changes.

Technology and The Other Side of the Coin

The fact that technology continues to evolve at such a rapid rate is wonderful. People all over the world benefit from advances in healthcare, communications, engineering and so much more. In addition, Christmas and birthday gifts get cooler every year.

But for the folks who have to maintain, support, and plan for the future, technology advances are often hard to keep up with.

In addition to all their regular duties, IT experts are expected to stay on the cutting-edge of technology advancements to recognize the trends and incorporate them into a business. The reality is too often different. IT workers get over burdened; they are burnt-out or sometimes just don’t care. People become complicit and comfortable, and don’t want to work too hard.

Stepping Up to the Challenge

This reality not only means some great technology goes by unnoticed in an organization; it often put the company at a disadvantage against competitors and unable to deliver results to customers.

Look at your IT staff. Are they up on the latest trends? Do they have the certifications and skills that may mean the difference between closing a big sale and ensuring the company’s future, or causing layoffs in the future? Are they helping the organization or just getting by?

They can help on all levels from managing a help desk to business analysis and project management.

Don’t let your company fall behind because you’re not up-to-date on the latest and greatest. Learn more and find the IT staff you deserve.
